Two major ticketing changes have been implemented in the last two years. In August 2003 passengers were required to purchase tickets prior to boarding the bus.
Single trip tickets or one day passes could be purchased from ticket machines at (some) bus stops. This meant the end of the old print out paper bus tickets sold by conductors on the bus.
The role of the conductor shifted from selling tickets to simply checking them. [see here for Pasticbag's comments on the user interface of the ticket machine]

The Oyster smart card system was then introduced across all London transport. It This card supports pre-pay, travel cards and season passes.
The costs of bus travel has also increased significantly since the beginning of this project. A single trip now costs £1.20 and a book (6) of super saver tickets is £6.0
