The monkey. Late night Friday, bus crowded, only one seat left on the top deck and it's next to me, sitting front right. A man climbs up the stairs carrying a ventriloquist's monkey. I turn round and watch his progress towards me, other passengers silently thankful he can't sit next to them.

He sits next to me in silence.

A few seconds pass. Then the monkey turns to me with a chirpy 'Hello!'

Oh god, I think.

The monkey starts chatting about the weather, the health service, politics. I try to ignore him. But the trouble is, he's a very interesting monkey. Before long, we're engaged in an animated conversation about the pros and cons of the Euro. Throughout all this the man stares ahead, deadpan.

After about 10 minutes - after all the other top deck passengers have fallen silent one by one to listen to our converastion, the monkey announces that the next stop is his and he'll have to get off. As if following orders, the man rises, still deadpan.

I say thank you.

No response.

The monkey, however, raises a paw in farewell.
