The phone. It's strange how many conversations we're now able to - and are essentially, actually forced to at times - eavesdrop upon. I do an extended series of bus commutes myself (in San Francisco California) and frequently spend most of my trip hearing one or more conversations that are made somewhat bizarre by their being one-sided. Recently instead of a cellphone convo I encountered a street person on the bus, one who was a bit of a wingnut, who was animatedly talking to an invisible companion. Others on the bus looked over at him nervously but since I'm kind of kooky myself he didn't bother me. It occurred to me how much this resembled a cellphone conversation since I could only hear one side of it. Which brought me to think of something. I proceeded to share it with this man. "You know, if there's ever a time you want to...you know, converse with your..." I made a meaningful gesture indicating the presence of an important person, and smiled, "...your friend here that doesn't feel inclined to talk to the rest of us? If you ever wanted to have a talk with your friend and not have people staring at you like they were just now...You could like, get a broken cellphone, and just carry it around with you." To which the guy returned my smile and pulled something out of his jacket pocket. "I know..." he said. "Got mine right here!" Everyone sitting in the back of the bus laughed out loud, including the schizophrenic. It was a moment of a sort rarely experienced riding public transit. Posted by: monde | May 10, 2004 | 04:07 PM |
